Dial-Up / Telephone Line This involves purchasing a modem and connecting it to an existing telephone socket. The best connection speeds offered by this are 56 Kbps on a good line. The more people who are online at the one time, the slower the connection speed.
ISDN / Modified Telephone Line This type of line offers a 64 to 128 Kbps connection speed. It gives you the advantage of having 3 lines into your house -in effect 3 telephone numbers. This means that you could surf the Internet and have someone on telephone at the same time.
Broadband / ADSL This involves the local exchange being updated to modern equipment capable of delivering the service. This means speeds of approximately 512 Kbps. This can be a permanent connection 24 hours a day 7 days a week – no dialling up is needed. - Having your computer connected to the Internet continuously is a potentially dangerous action for most though, as their PC will be quite vulnerable to access from anyone on the Internet. A firewall is recommended to stop people accessing your PC from the Internet.
